Minister Cullen TD said: "Winning the
British Open Golf Championship back-to-back is a magnificent personal
achievement for Pádraig Harrington. Last year we were all delighted when
Pádraig became the first Irishman in 60 years to win the British Open. The fact
that he achieved a victory again at
Royal Birkdale and lift the Claret Jug is a stunning success. Pádraig is fast
becoming Ireland's
greatest ever golfer." The Minister added: "Staying the distance and
holding his nerve, Harrington played some beautiful golf as we have come to
expect. I extend my congratulations to this outstanding international
sportsman, who has earned a place for himself as one of the legends of Irish
sport. Pádraig Harrington is a wonderful Irishman and a magnificent sporting
ambassador for Ireland."
President Mary McAleese has issued a statement expressing the pride
of the whole country is the 36-year-old's achievement, while Brian
Cowen says the win will ensure his place in sporting history and legend.
The
Taoiseach also says Harrington's performance on the back nine holes
epitomised everything about the man's skill, courage, determination and
sheer class.
Sports Minister Martin Cullen, meanwhile, has
described Harrington as Ireland's greatest-ever sportsman, saying he
has honed his talent to achieve true greatness.
